News from SpinkSPINK TO OFFER PART 3 OF ADIL KAROUNI ENGLISH BANKNOTES ON 30TH SEPTEMBERMany significant items contained in the last portion of this highly important collection The final part of the “Karouni” collection includes many significant pieces with banknotes dated from as early as 1800. Many specimens are represented from a long list of well known Governors of the Bank of England, virtually up to the present day. As usual, other than from the earliest notes, attention will fall on the higher value denominations which were naturally printed in smaller quantities. Denominations run from 10/- to £1000 with a wide choice of £10, £20, £50 and £100 notes. As £500 and £1000 notes only occur rarely at auction we are pleased to be able to offer examples in this sale. A few highlights only are mentioned below, but the full auction catalogue can be examined on this site (searchable version where you can also place bids online, or in PDF), and printed catalogues can be ordered from our offices.
Lot 5 contains a £10 banknote dated 13th March 1790 with serial number 4475 issued in London. The earliest recorded appears to be 1798 by Duggleby, so this is of great importance and carries an estimate of £24,000/£28,000. Lots 13 and 14 contain £5 notes from the stewardship of Governor Matthew Marshall. Both dated 12th April 1843 with serial numbers V/K 21872 and 21873, these very rare examples are estimated at £7,000/£8,000.
The Treasury series under John Bradbury includes Lot 43. Seven denominations include four 10/- notes and three £1 values. Remarkably they all carry the same serial number of 000100, four with A1 prefix and one with B1. In very fine condition, this most unusual accumulation is valued at £9,000/£11,000.
Lot 137 is the first of the two £1000 notes. Dated at London 15th November 1933 during the stewardship of B.G. Catterns, this lovely note in fine condition is estimated at £20,000/£26,000.
Lots 210 and 211 are high value notes under Governor K.O. Peppiatt. The first is a £500 note issued in Liverpool and dated the 30th September 1936. This is a scarce denomination used outside London in very fine condition, and is estimated from £6,000. The following lot is the £1000 value issued in London on the 15th October 1935 with serial number 12/S 01046. Equally fine as the previous item, it is expected to realise £23,000/£25,000. The above selections should excite collectors of this fascinating subject,
and, as this is the final part of this important collection, may present
the only opportunity for decades to acquire these gems.
